Severe Thunderstorms Possible Monday & Tuesday

severe feat

1:00 PM Sunday

Severe weather may threaten the region early this week. We are monitoring a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms for Monday and Tuesday. All modes of severe weather are possible, but the primary threat is damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. Large hail over an inch in diameter and isolated tornadoes are also possible.

Monday

For Monday, the Storm Prediction Center has placed most of East Tennessee under a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms. Northern locations near the TN/KY border are under an Enhanced Risk and will see the greatest chance of severe weather.

A complex of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to move southeast from Kentucky into the Tennessee Valley Monday evening through early Tuesday morning. The exact timing of this system is uncertain, but models are suggesting these storms impacting after dark Monday through the early morning hours of Tuesday.

The primary threat from these storms is damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. Large hail over an inch in diameter and heavy rainfall may also occur. Tornadoes are not likely, however, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. But overall, the tornado threat is quite low .

Tuesday

The severe threat increases on Tuesday. The SPC has the entire region under an Enhanced Risk for severe weather. As previously mentioned, severe storms are possible during the early morning hours. But, another round or two is expected in the afternoon and evening.

Models suggest the development of isolated supercell thunderstorms during the afternoon. These storms may be very dangerous, capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and even tornadoes. After these cells, a squall line with embedded supercells will likely progress from Kentucky into the region. The timing of these storms is uncertain but the threat of damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes will continue.
